Terry Jones is a Welsh photographer, video director, i-D magazine co-founder and editor, whose work has included directing Duran Duran's "Careless Memories" music video.
Biography[]
Terry studied Commercial Art at the West of England College of Art in Bristol. After leaving college and after a formative job assisting graphic designer Ivan Dodd, the 27-year-old Terry was hired as the art director of British Vogue. Five years later in 1977 he felt it had become too stifling and left. He then work for a magazine called Sportswear Europe, consulted for German Vogue, art directed books and worked with Dennis Morris on album sleeves for PIL (Public Image Limited).
In 1980 Terry launched i-D magazine with co-founder Perry Haines as a 40-page, photocopied response to the expensive formality of most magazines at the time. Deemed a health risk because of the ungainly staples that held it together, the first issues were banned from magazine retailers, so Perry Haines and Jones distributed it from the boots of their cars. Thus, in page form, i-D embodied the flourishing anti-establishment attitude of the time. In between fashion shoots and interviews, i-D also tackled issues such as fair trade, the environment, war and poverty. In the late 1990s, as circulation across all style magazines started to dip, Jones decided to cut out music, film and art from the magazine, opting instead to repackage i-D as an identifiable fashion magazine again.
Following the launch of i-D magazine, Terry directed Duran Duran's 1981 "Careless Memories" video with Perry Haines, filmed in Soho, London. He would also contribute photography to the inner sleeve of band's debut album Duran Duran.
