Steve started playing saxophone at the age of 11 and after high school began performing with rhythm and blues, latin, soul music and jazz groups around the S.F. Bay Area. As a teenager Steve toured the USA with Johnny Otis Rythm & Blues Revue, which featured Eddie Vinson, Shuggie Otis and the Three Tons of Joy. He went on to perform and record with a variety of artists including Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Sam & Dave, and Talking Heads. He co-founded the proto-funk group Slickaphonics, which would record five albums and perform all over the world. Steve also co-founded The Borneo Horns (with Lenny Pickett and Stan Harrison) and toured throughout Europe and the USA.
Having studied the saxophone with Hal Stein and Joe Henderson, Steve continued to play that instrument (as well as the clarinet and flute) with artists such as Joe Jackson, Stevie Ray Vaughn and also performing during the Duran Duran on Broadway shows in 2007.
His interest in music of various cultures led him to study accordion, Armenian duduk, Japanese shakuhachi, the Indian bansuri flute and the Arabic flute called the ney.
