Sterling Campbell
DDW: the united memory of all the fans
Sterling Campbell (b. May 3, 1964) is a rock drummer who was a member of Duran Duran from 1989 to 1991. He was hired to tour with the band during the promotion of Big Thing, and was made a full member of the band at the end of the year. He contributed to the recording and promotion of Liberty, then was asked to leave after he failed to get involved for preparations for what would eventually become The Wedding Album.
Campbell was born and raised in New York City, and began his rock/pop career by working with Cyndi Lauper in the mid-1980s. After his stint with Duran Duran, he was a member of Soul Asylum from 1995 to 1998. He has also recorded and toured with David Bowie, David Byrne, The B-52's, Tina Turner, and many more.
In 1998, he became a follower of the Falun Gong spiritual movement, which he says helped him to overcome substance abuse issues which had plagued him for years. In February 2002, he travelled with some other Falun Gong practitioners to China, to peacefully protest the Chinese government's ban of this practice method. He was arrested, detained, and finally expelled from the country.
