Sterling Campbell (born May 3, 1964) is a rock drummer who was a member of Duran Duran from 1989 to 1991. He was hired to tour with the band during the promotion of Big Thing, and was made a full member of the band at the end of the year. He contributed to the recording and promotion of Liberty, but was then asked to get out of the band after he failed to get involved for preparations for what would eventually become The Wedding Album. The band had asked him to move to England permanently to be closer to the rest of the band, as they wished to work in Warren's 'Privacy' studio in Battersea London but Sterling refused, preferring to stay close to his big apple roots. The good working relationship built up over the tour and recording of Liberty soon soured and left the band with little choice but to cut contact with Sterling and move on.
Biography[]
Campbell was born and raised in New York City, and began his rock/pop career by working with Cyndi Lauper in the mid-1980s.
In 1998, he became a follower of the Falun Gong spiritual movement, which he says helped him to overcome substance abuse issues which had plagued him for years. In February 2002, he travelled with some other Falun Gong practitioners to China, to peacefully protest the Chinese government's ban of this practice method. He was arrested, detained, and finally expelled from the country.
