Lorimer studied the trumpet at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. His classical music background can be heard in his work on The Waterboys' single "The Whole of the Moon", the band's greatest commercial success. Lorimer includes another Waterboys recording, an arrangement of the W.B. Yeats poem "The Stolen Child", amongst his top ten favourite recordings of all time.
Among his influences in popular music, Lorimer cites Miles Davis and Chuck Mangione.
He is currently a member of the horn section Kick Horns. Over his career he has performed with Blur, Gene, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Suede and The Waterboys.
