New York City: 13-04-2005 is an unofficial Duran Duran live album, recorded during The Astronaut Tour at Madison Square Garden in New York, NY, USA on 13 April 2005.
About the album[]
The album is a recording of Duran Duran's performance at Madison Square Garden, a 20,000 capacity a venue Duran Duran first played in March 1984. The show was part of 67 North American dates on the tour.
Duran Duran arrived onstage in the dark and stood side by side, illuminated by camera flashes and flickering strobe lights. The packed arena met the band with shrieks and screams.
Opening with a rock version of "(Reach Up for The) Sunrise", the band then gave the people a trip back to the 80s in the form of "Hold Back the Rain".
After that came the title track to Astronaut. Before playing the song, Simon Le Bon said "Duran Duran, Madison Square Garden, New York City, 2005, that's what we've been looking foreward to. It's been 21 years since this band stood in this place. We knew we would get back here."
"Careless Memories" was performed with five separate portrait-shaped video screens above the stage. A tribute to Japanese animation, they showed each band member taking on gangs of mask-wearing ninjas, using their instruments as weapons.
Duran Duran paid its respects to New York by performing "White Lines", the 1983 anticocaine rap by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel.
The evening finished with "Rio", featuring Andy Hamilton playing saxophone.
Tickets for the event cost around $79.50.
