Melle Mel (born Melvin Glover, May 15, 1961) is an American Grammy Award winning rapper and songwriter for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, whose work has included performing on Duran Duran's cover version of "White Lines" released in 1995.

Biography Edit

Melle was the first rapper ever to call himself "MC" (Master of Ceremony). Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five began recording for Enjoy Records and released "Superrappin'" in 1979, an album which was party-oriented. However, by 1982 Melle Mel’s lyrics began to focus on socially important issues like the Reagan administration’s policies. In particular, the song "The Message" became a popular number.

After Grandmaster Flash’s exit from the group, Mel came to be known as "Grandmaster Melle Mel" fronting the Furious Five. Success followed with Mel becoming the first rap artist ever to win a Grammy for his rap on Chaka Khan's "I Feel for You". In 1988, Mel and Flash came together again and cut "On The Strength". Two more Grammies later Melle Mel released Right Now in 1997.

In 2007, The Furious Five became the first and only rap group ever inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Soon after, Mel changed his name to "Mele Mel" & released his debut solo album, Muscles on January 30, 2007.
