"Watermelon In Easter Hay" is an instrumental by Frank Zappa with a spoken word introduction, released on the Joe's Garage album by Zappa Records in 1979.

About the instrumental[]

Written and produced by Frank Zappa, the instrumental is part of a rock opera that tells the story of what could possibly happen if music was made illegal.

The track begins with a spoken word introduction and features a guitar solo that runs to 9 minutes, 9 seconds. This is the penultimate track on the Joe's Garage concept album.

Warren Cuccurullo performed the instrument as a tribute to Frank Zappa at some of Duran Duran's Dilate Your Mind Tour shows after Zappa died on 4 December 1993. Performances included the Manchester 22.01.94 concert.

Lyrics[]

CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER:
This is the CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER...Joe has just worked himself into
an imaginary frenzy during the fade-out of his imaginary song...
He begins to feel depressed now. He knows the end is near. He has realized
at last that imaginary guitar notes and imaginary vocals exist only in the mind
of The Imaginer ...and ... ultimately, who gives a fuck anyway... Who gives a fuck
anyway? So he goes back to his ugly little room and quietly dreams his last
maginary guitar solo...
