Correspondencia is an art project by Laureana Toledo and John Taylor, first shown at the 2009 Abstract Cabinet Show in Birmingham and later at the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros in Mexico City, Mexico from 28 July until 16 October 2011.

About the art project[]

This is a collaboration between Mexican artist Laureana Toledo and John Taylor. Correspondencia premiered at the Abstract Cabinet Show, held at Eastside Projects in Birmingham, UK during 2009.

The art piece consists of two simultaneous videos, where both Toledo and Taylor filmed the others’ city, interrupted by a quasi abstract conversation and music from both cities. The collage features Mexico City and Birmingham.

There is also a newspaper featured, with the transcript of the conversation – as if it were important news – designed by John Taylor and Patty Palazzo. The installation showcases an amp where you can hear the bass lines from a Duran Duran concert, recorded at the Fillmore Theatre show in San Francisco during 2011.

The project was conceived during a stay of Toledo in Birmingham, where he noticed that his favorite bass players agree on the name, John: John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), John Entwistle (The Who) and John Taylor (Duran Duran).

Toledo shot with a Super 8 camera scenes of everyday life in Birmingham, that includes the people, traffic, streets and museums. Taylor, meanwhile, did the same in Mexico City. The result: an audiovisual piece of music by popular rock songs in both cities. All the pieces that make up evidence of the disintegration of an encounter between two people, languages, cultures and circumstances

The second showing of Correspondencia is from 28 July and until 16 October 2011 at the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros. The room is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 hours. Free admission for teachers, students, disabled, children under 12 and seniors.
