Budapest 1988 is an unofficial Duran Duran live album, recorded during The Big Live Thing Tour at the Budapest Sportcsarnok in Budapest, Hungary on 6 December 1988.
About the album[]
The album is a recording of Duran Duran's performance at the Budapest Sportcsarnok, a 12,500 capacity venue located in the center of the country's capital city. This was Duran Duran's first ever performance in Hungary.
After playing sixteen shows in eleven different countries, the tour reached Budapest. Flanked by guitarists John Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo on either side, Simon Le Bon launched into the opening lines of the first song "Big Thing".
Taking the crowd back to Rio, "Hungry Like the Wolf" elicited a huge roar of cheering from the audience. While the crowd of several thousand sang along to one of the most memorable songs of the 80s, John Taylor’s bass popped to the forefront of the mix, sending waves of danceable grooves all over the venue.
Missing original members Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor, Duran Duran were backed by guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, drummer Sterling Campbell, two horn players and two backing singers.
Throughout the night, the band mixed most of their greatest hits with new material. In total, seven songs from Big Thing were played.
"Rio" served as the evening’s grand finale. Towards the end of the song Stan Harrison played a saxophone solo.
Edina Rácz, a teenage fan won the chance to meet Simon Le Bon backstage before the concert as part of the Hungarian television program Három kívánság (Three Wishes). The producers of the show chose Rácz out of 1,600 letter-writing fans who all wished to meet Duran Duran. Rácz (with the help of an interpreter) asked Le Bon several questions and had her Duran Duran poster signed by him. The show also filmed the live performance of "I Don't Want Your Love". [1]
