Birmingham: NEC 1988 is an unofficial Duran Duran live album, recorded during The Big Live Thing Tour at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, UK on 24 December 1988.
About the album[]
The album is a recording of Duran Duran's performance at the NEC Arena, a 16,000 capacity venue located adjacent to Birmingham International Airport. The concert was the fourth of thirteen UK dates performed on the tour.
This was a home coming show, held in the city where the band were part of the New Romantic scene of the 1980s. It was also the only Christmas Eve date that Duran Duran have ever performed on during a tour.
Opening act J.J. Slick began the evening early at 7:30pm, so fans could get home by public transportation before the Christmas Day shut down at midnight.
Returning to the venue that Duran Duran first played during The Sing Blue Silver Tour, the band appeared on stage to the spoken word intro of "God (London)".
After opening with the title track from their latest album, Big Thing, Duran Duran moved directly into their seventeenth single "I Don't Want Your Love" released in September 1988.
"Do You Believe In Shame?" was played, a song dedicated to three of the band's fallen friends: record producer Alex Sadkin, artist Andy Warhol, and Simon Le Bon's childhood friend David Miles.
Near the end of the show, band introductions included a short drum solo played by Sterling Campbell, who was hired for this tour and became a full member of Duran Duran at the end of 1989.
The evening finished with the Colin Thurston produced "Rio".
