Birmingham, NEC, UK: 14.12.00 is an unofficial Duran Duran live album, recorded during The Pop Trash Tour at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, UK on 14 December 2000.
About the album[]
The album is a recording of Duran Duran's performance at the NEC Arena, a 16,000 capacity venue located adjacent to Birmingham International Airport. The show was the 5th of nine UK dates on the tour.
This was a home coming show for Duran Duran, held in the city where the band were part of the New Romantic scene of the 1980s.
The UK Christmas tour were all sold-out dates. They featured the world's first use of 'augmented reality' technology, used in live concerts. Duran Duran worked with a computer graphics producer to create advanced 2D and 3D visual effects, which allowed animated characters to appear live on stage with the band.
The arena was plunged into darkness, then with an instrumental introduction Duran Duran appeared on stage. An explosion of light saw the launch the show, as the band powered through the hard edge "Last Day on Earth" from Pop Trash.
During the show, "Notorious" featured a 13 minute intro. "Late Bar" followed, a song only performed in Birmingham, Orlando and Charlotte on the tour.
Near the end of the evening, Simon Le Bon interacted with a 3D animated girl, projected onto the backdrop during an extended version of "Girls on Film". This sequence was scrapped after the show.
