Aston University (also known as Birmingham 81) is an unofficial Duran Duran live album, recorded during The First UK Tour at Aston University in Birmingham, UK on 27 February 1981.
About the albumEdit
The album is a recording of Duran Duran's performance at Aston University, a campus university situated at Gosta Green in the city centre of Birmingham.
The show was the first of six dates performed during the tour.
After performing their first show at Aston University on 1 February 1980, Duran Duran returned for their second and last performance at this venue located several miles from the Rum Runner nightclub.
Performing close to Villa Park where the band would play The MENCAP Concert in 1983, Duran Duran launched the show with "Anyone Out There".
Soon Duran Duran were performing "Planet Earth" for the very first time on tour, a single released with the B-side "Late Bar".
The show continued with songs from their unreleased debut album Duran Duran, including "Night Boat" written by Simon Le Bon when he was waiting for a ride from the nightbus home.
The album also includes two bonus tracks, which are also available on EMI Demos, Old Grey Whistle Test, Off The Record.
The front cover photography features Duran Duran at Birmingham's NEC Arena in the background, a venue the band first played on 12 December 1983 (N.E.C. TV Show 1983).
